Common ChatGPT Problems & How to Fix Them

ChatGPT acting up? Before you panic, try these fixes first.

ChatGPT won’t load or shows a blank screen

Problem: The page is blank, hangs on loading, or shows a white screen.

Fix: Clear your browser’s cache and cookies for chatgpt.com, then reload. If that doesn’t work, try an incognito window with extensions disabled — corrupted cache is the single most common cause of blank screens and loading loops.

Login issues or SSO redirect loops

Problem: You can’t log in, or get bounced back and forth during sign-in.

Fix: Clear cookies for chatgpt.com and auth0.openai.com, then try an incognito window. If you’re on an Enterprise or Education plan using SSO, check with your IT admin — this is a known issue tied to session token handling.

“Too many requests” or rate limit errors

Problem: You hit a usage cap message.

Fix: Rate limits are dynamic and apply to all plans. Wait a few minutes before retrying. If this happens often, upgrading to a paid plan typically raises your limit significantly.

Response stops mid-reply or hangs

Problem: ChatGPT starts answering, then freezes or cuts off.

Fix: Wait 30–60 seconds to see if it completes. If not, click “Stop generating,” then “Regenerate.” Long conversations are a common cause — starting a new chat for a new topic helps prevent this.

“Unusual activity detected” or account flagged

Problem: You’re blocked with a message about suspicious activity.

Fix: This is a protection measure, not necessarily an account problem. Disable any VPN or proxy, avoid rapid repeated retries, and make sure you’re not sharing your account login with others.

Slow or laggy responses

Problem: Replies take much longer than usual.

Fix: Long conversations accumulate context, which slows processing. Start a fresh chat instead of continuing one long thread, and keep prompts reasonably concise.

File upload or download errors

Problem: Can’t upload a file, or a generated file link doesn’t work.

Fix: Files generated by ChatGPT expire quickly — try downloading right away. For custom GPTs, make sure Code Interpreter is enabled if your task requires it.
