Microsoft Copilot is already sitting on your Windows PC, inside your Edge browser, and built into Microsoft 365 — and most people use it as nothing more than a basic chatbot. That is a waste. A handful of settings changes will turn Copilot into a genuinely useful AI assistant that works across your entire Microsoft ecosystem. Here is what to configure.
1. Use Copilot Notebook
Go to copilot.microsoft.com and look for the Notebook option. Unlike regular chat, which resets context between sessions, Notebook gives you a persistent workspace where your content stays put. It is built for longer projects, research sessions, and content you need to keep refining over time. If you are working on anything that takes more than one sitting, Notebook is where you should be doing it — not in a standard chat window that forgets everything when you close it.
2. Turn On Plugins
Click the plugin icon in any Copilot conversation and enable the plugins relevant to your workflow — Search, Microsoft 365, Shopping, and others depending on what Microsoft has made available to your account. Plugins give Copilot access to real-time data and live information instead of relying on training data alone. With Search enabled, Copilot pulls current web results into its answers. With Microsoft 365 enabled, it can see your files and emails. Without plugins, you are using a fraction of what Copilot can do.
3. Connect It to Microsoft 365
If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, toggle on the Work switch inside Copilot chat. This is the setting that makes Copilot genuinely useful for productivity. With it on, Copilot can read your Outlook emails, summarize Teams meetings, reference Word documents, and pull data from Excel — all from inside a single conversation. Ask it to catch you up on what you missed while you were offline, draft a reply based on an email thread, or summarize a document from your OneDrive. This is Copilot’s strongest feature and the one most users never enable.
4. Set Up Voice Mode
Go to Settings → Speech in the Copilot app and enable Voice Mode. Choose your preferred voice from the available options — spend a few minutes trying them to find one that does not drive you crazy. Once it is set up, you can talk to Copilot completely hands-free. Dictate rough drafts out loud and ask Copilot to clean them up. Brainstorm while you are doing something else. Ask questions while cooking, commuting, or doing chores. Voice input is faster and more natural than typing for many tasks, and most people never touch this setting.
5. Set Your Personalization Preferences
Click your profile icon → Settings → Personalization and fill in your preferences. Tell Copilot who you are, what you do, your preferred communication style, and how you want responses formatted. These settings carry into every conversation automatically. Without them, Copilot starts every session with zero context about you and defaults to generic, one-size-fits-all responses. With them, every answer is already calibrated to your situation before you type your first word.
6. Use Copilot Pages
Copilot Pages lets you turn any AI-generated response into a living document that you can edit, share, and collaborate on with others in real time. Instead of copying and pasting Copilot output into Word or a notes app, Pages keeps everything in one place and makes it shareable with a link. Think of it as the bridge between Copilot’s output and actual work — a response that becomes a real, editable document rather than just a chat bubble you will lose track of. Look for the Pages option when you get a response you want to save or build on.
