6 ChatGPT Settings You Should Configure Right Now (Most People Skip These)

Most people open ChatGPT, type a question, get an answer, and call it a day. That works — but it’s leaving a lot on the table. A handful of settings changes, most of which take under two minutes, will make every conversation you have with ChatGPT noticeably better. Here’s what to set up.

1. Set Custom Instructions

Go to Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions. You get two text boxes: one to tell ChatGPT who you are and what you do, and one to tell it how you want responses formatted. This applies to every conversation automatically. Fill in both boxes with as much detail as possible — your role, your audience, your preferred tone, and what you never want to see. It is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement you can make.

2. Turn On Memory

Go to Settings → Personalization → Memory and enable it. ChatGPT now runs a two-layer memory system — explicit saved memories you approve, and implicit context it picks up from your conversations over time. Once it’s on, ChatGPT builds a profile of who you are across sessions. You stop re-explaining yourself every time you open a new chat, and responses start feeling like they actually know you. You can audit what it remembers anytime by typing “What do you remember about me?”

3. Use Projects Instead of Regular Chats

If you are working on anything ongoing — a blog, a business, a side project — create a Project for it. Projects keep their own conversations, files, and instructions all in one place. You set the context once and ChatGPT carries it into every conversation inside that project. No more copy-pasting background information every time you open a new chat. Think of it as a dedicated workspace per area of your life.

4. Connect Your Apps

Under Settings → Connected Apps, you can link Google Drive, Dropbox, GitHub, SharePoint, and more. Once connected, ChatGPT can pull your actual files directly into any conversation or Project — no copying and pasting required. Ask it to summarize a document in your Drive, review code in a GitHub repo, or reference a file from Dropbox. This turns ChatGPT from a standalone chatbot into something that actually works inside your existing workflow.

5. Enable Chat History

Go to Settings → Data Controls and make sure Chat History is turned on. When it is enabled, every conversation is saved and searchable by keyword. Your best prompts, research sessions, and useful outputs become a permanent, indexed library you can search in seconds. Without it on, everything disappears when you close the tab. Treat your past conversations as a resource — they are.

6. Build a Custom GPT

Go to Explore GPTs → Create and build a version of ChatGPT pre-loaded with your voice, your instructions, and your files. A Custom GPT is a dedicated AI assistant configured exactly for a specific workflow — your blog, your business, your writing style. Unlike Custom Instructions which apply globally, a Custom GPT is purpose-built for one job and stays consistent every time you use it. It is the most powerful personalization tool ChatGPT offers.

The Takeaway

None of these settings are hard to find. They are just easy to skip when you are focused on getting an answer fast. But once you configure them, they work silently in the background on every conversation — which means the payoff compounds over time. Spend 15 minutes on this once and you will be ahead of the vast majority of ChatGPT users.
