Common Microsoft Copilot Problems & How to Fix Them

Copilot acting up? Before you panic, try these fixes first.

“Something went wrong” error

Problem: Copilot fails to respond and shows a generic error message.

Fix: This usually points to a licensing, sign-in, or temporary service issue rather than your prompt. Refresh your license: in any Microsoft 365 app, go to the app menu, then About, then More Info, then Refresh License, then restart the app.

Copilot icon missing from Microsoft 365 apps

Problem: You believe you have a Copilot license, but the icon isn’t showing.

Fix: Run the built-in Copilot License Troubleshooter: open the Get Help app, search “Copilot License Troubleshooter,” and follow the steps.

Can’t connect to Copilot

Problem: Copilot won’t load or connect at all.

Fix: Use the Copilot Connectivity Troubleshooter (also in the Get Help app) to check for firewall rules or network blockers.

Sign-in errors (e.g. error 1001)

Problem: A sign-in error appears when trying to use Copilot.

Fix: This is often unrelated to Copilot itself. Try signing out of all Microsoft accounts (personal and work/school) and signing back in with only the account that holds the Copilot license. Rebooting the device also resolves many sign-in token issues.

Licensing recently assigned but not working

Problem: Your admin just assigned a Copilot license, but it’s not activating.

Fix: License changes can take time to propagate — wait a bit and retry. If it’s still not working after a while, ask your admin to confirm the license is active and correctly assigned.

Connected experiences disabled

Problem: Copilot can’t access your content or files.

Fix: Check that “Experiences that analyze your content” and “All connected experiences” are both turned on in your Microsoft 365 settings. In managed organizations, an admin may need to enable these.

Inconsistent or “fuzzy” answers

Problem: Copilot gives vague or unhelpful responses.

Fix: This usually reflects unclear or overloaded prompts rather than a bug. Be specific about what you want, and break complex requests into smaller, clearer steps.

Still not working?

Use Feedback, then Report a Problem inside Copilot, or open a support ticket through your Microsoft 365 admin if it’s an organization-managed account.
